PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

HOW IS THE MBA PROGRAMME STRUCTURED?
ALUSB’s 20-month MBA programme uses technology to leapfrog traditional MBA learning models. Rather than a residential program that takes students out of the workforce for as much as two years and emphasizes theoretical approaches, the ALUSB MBA uses a cutting-edge ‘flipped’ educational model that emphasizes student-centered, participatory learning based on real-world issues. Instead of simply memorizing frameworks and formulae, ALUSB MBA students will gain key problem-solving, strategic-thinking, communication, and leadership skills—as well as a peer network drawn from countries across the continent.
WHEN WILL THE MBA PROGRAMME START?
The next MBA cohort will start in July 2017. The previous class began September 2016.
WHAT MAKES THE MBA PROGRAMME FROM ALUSB DIFFERENT?

WHY DO I NEED A GENERAL MBA DEGREE?

Many students are deciding between earning a general MBA degree, and a degree in a more narrow specific business discipline – listen as Vice Dean Catherine Duggan addresses this inquiry from a recent webinar.

  • December 31, 2016 – Round 1 Application Deadline
  • March 5, 2017 – Round 2 Application Deadline
  • May 7, 2017 – Round 3 Application Deadline
HOW DO I APPLY TO THE ALUSB MBA PROGRAMME?
You can begin your application on our website: http://application.alusb.com/
IS THERE AN APPLICATION FEE, AND IF SO, HOW MUCH?
There is no application fee.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE THE APPLICATION?
The time required to complete the application varies from person to person. The strongest applications demonstrate thoughtful reflection and articulation of the applicant’s leadership journey.
HOW WILL MY APPLICATION BE EVALUATED?
The Admissions Committee will review each application in great depth. When selecting candidates, we will emphasize demonstrated leadership potential, breadth and depth of work experience, passion for/interest in Africa, and plans for future impact. We will also consider diversity, to ensure that we have a class that is balanced, for example, across geography, industry, and gender.
WHEN WILL I KNOW WHETHER MY APPLICATION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL?
The Admissions Committee will issue admissions decisions on a rolling basis. You can expect to receive a decision from us within a month of the application round in which you submitted your application.
DO I NEED REFERENCE LETTERS TO APPLY TO THE ALU MBA PROGRAMME?
Yes. You will need 2 reference letters from people who can give an accurate, detailed description of your work experience, character and leadership abilities. One of the letters must come from your supervisor at your current or former place of work. The second letter can come from a supervisor or a colleague.
WHO SHOULD I CHOOSE TO SUBMIT MY REFERENCE LETTERS?
Your reference letters should come from people who know you well and can attest to your leadership, work experience and personal qualities. Current or recent direct supervisors are often well placed to do this. If you choose to have a colleague submit one of your reference letters, you should pick someone with whom you have worked directly and who knows you well.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR SUBMITTING REFERENCE LETTERS?
As part of the application process you will be asked to provide the contact information of the individuals you would like to submit your reference letters. The ALUSB admissions team will then reach out to these individuals with instructions on how to submit reference letters online.
IS THE REFERENCE LETTER DEADLINE THE SAME AS THE APPLICATION DEADLINE?
Yes. You should ensure referees submit reference letters before the application deadline. We, however, encourage you to go ahead and submit your part of the application whether or not referees have submitted reference letters.
DO I NEED TO GET APPROVAL FROM MY EMPLOYER BEFORE APPLYING TO THE ALUSB MBA PROGRAMME?
This is a decision that you will have to make. However, since the programme requires dedicating a significant amount of time each week, and periodic one-week in-person intensive sessions, it might be prudent that your organisation and direct manager be aware of your potential involvement in the programme. Moreover, ALUSB will work with your supervisors to design your Capstone Project and with your organisation generally to provide 360º feedback.
CAN I APPLY TO THE ALUSB MBA PROGRAMME IF I AM SELF-EMPLOYED?
Absolutely. Self-employed, entrepreneurial candidates can reap tremendous benefits from the programme and we encourage them to apply.
CAN I APPLY TO THE ALUSB MBA PROGRAMME IF I DON'T HAVE A BACHELOR'S DEGREE?
